19. Modern African Conflicts: Land, Minerals & Displacement
1. How events unfolded
Conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and the Sahel have different histories but share pressures involving armed groups, state weakness, regional interference and civilian insecurity. Minerals and gold can finance factions, although resource competition alone does not explain the wars.
2. The costs & gains
In eastern Congo, cycles of displacement and violence have disrupted farming and commerce. Sudan’s war beginning in 2023 has devastated urban neighborhoods and pushed millions from their homes. In parts of the Sahel, insurgency and military coups have undermined services and displaced communities.
3. What endured
An ore shipment or gold sale can generate income for a faction while surrounding towns lose schools, clinics and functioning markets. Recovery requires security and accountable control of resources, alongside humanitarian relief and locally credible political settlements.
