Giving pledges and concentrated financial power

People and institutions: Warren Buffett

What happened, and when

Warren Buffett announced in 2006 that he would donate much of his Berkshire Hathaway wealth, including substantial gifts to the Gates Foundation and family-linked foundations. The Giving Pledge followed in 2010 with Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates as prominent founders.

Effects on communities and other countries

Large commitments can finance long-term public-interest work, but a pledge is not the same as an immediate transfer or a verified program outcome.

Benefits, influence and possible misuse

Donors may gain reputational benefits, relationships and potential tax advantages subject to applicable law. Concentrating giving through a small number of institutions also concentrates agenda-setting authority.

Checks and balances

Distinguish pledges from disbursements, publish annual grant figures, examine tax treatment and preserve independent governance.

Follow the evidence: To evaluate a particular grant, identify its year, legal donor, recipient, restrictions and publicly documented results. A grant record alone does not establish control over a recipient’s every action. How to trace grant records · Boards, regulators and courts.
