Overview
Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, usually called PAS, is a Malaysian Islamist party whose history includes changing combinations of religious authority, nationalism, and electoral pragmatism. Ulama means religious scholars. An ulama-led party gives scholars a special organizational role; it does not mean every Muslim scholar endorses that party or its policies. [1]
Organizations and supporting institutions
ISEAS research describes PAS’s Majlis Syura Ulama and debates about whether religious scholars must occupy the party’s highest political offices. Party congresses, grassroots networks, professional members, and electoral coalitions provide other structures. Internal disagreement helps explain why PAS cannot be reduced to one unchanging doctrine. [1]
Western relevance and limits
Its comparative relevance to Western societies concerns how a religious party seeks votes in a multiethnic country and how religious authority interacts with representation. The research also raises questions about inclusion beyond a core constituency. This page makes no claim that PAS represents Malaysian Muslims living abroad. [1][2]
Key distinction
Coalition participation is a political method, whereas ulama leadership is an internal authority arrangement. Neither alone establishes how minorities will be treated or how much religious law a party can implement. Examine party rules, actual legislation, constitutional constraints, and dissenting members’ arguments separately. Historical coalition descriptions should always retain their dates.
