Overview
Khomeinism refers here to the political tradition associated with Ruhollah Khomeini and Iran’s Islamic Revolution. Its defining institutional idea is velayat-e faqih, usually translated as guardianship of the jurist. In this model, a qualified religious jurist holds political authority extending beyond ordinary religious teaching. This interpretation is debated within Shi‘i thought rather than accepted by all Shi‘i Muslims. [1]
Organizations and supporting institutions
Iran’s postrevolutionary constitution incorporated juristic leadership alongside representative and supervisory institutions. The Supreme Leader, constitutional guardianship mechanisms, and elected bodies occupy different roles. Encyclopaedia Iranica documents how the revolutionary settlement developed; Cambridge scholarship highlights arguments about accountability, legitimacy, and the scope of the jurist’s authority. [1][2]
Western relevance and limits
Khomeini spent part of his exile in France, and his political message reached audiences internationally. His legacy matters to Western foreign-policy debates about Iran and clerical government. Historical circulation of an idea is not evidence that every Shi‘i mosque abroad is controlled by the Iranian state. [2]
Key distinction
This model differs from a religiously inspired party competing under a constitution that does not give a jurist superior authority. Ask who can overrule whom, how officials are selected, and whether citizens can replace decision-makers. Those institutional questions are more informative than simply calling a state Islamic.
