2. Historical development: World War I: Empires & Rupture

Historical developments and consequences

Industrial warfare consumed armies and civilian economies on an unprecedented scale. Trenches, artillery, blockades and occupation devastated communities. States borrowed heavily and redirected factories and farms toward military supply, creating shortages and inflation.

The Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires collapsed or were transformed. Peace settlements created new borders and minority disputes. Reparations, war debts and the loss of productive territory complicated recovery, although their effects differed among countries.

The war also accelerated demands for political rights and independence. Its economic lesson was severe: battlefield victory did not guarantee stability when societies faced bereavement, debt, displaced populations and weakened trust in government.
