Scale or institutional role
Global assets managed: US$13.3 trillion
Period: July 30, 2026; published September 21, 2026
Issuer-reported global client assets. Includes US$4.9 trillion global ETF assets, which are a subset and must not be added again. [1]
What the financial number means
A September 21, 2026 release issued by Vanguard Investments Canada reported US$13.3 trillion in global assets managed as of July 30. That is a dated client-asset measure, not an October valuation or Vanguard’s corporate net worth. ETF assets included in the release are part of the total rather than additional wealth. Different statistical providers may cover narrower fund universes. [1]
Ownership, voting, and public commitments
Vanguard is owned by its US-domiciled funds and ETFs, which are owned by their investors. This corporate ownership arrangement does not mean each fund investor directly controls every underlying company. Index funds generally follow specified benchmarks. Vanguard’s Investor Choice program offers eligible investors voting-policy options, and in 2026 it announced an intention to extend eligibility across US equity index funds by the end of 2027. Future plans are not completed coverage. [1][2]
How capital connects with supply chains
The company’s funds can hold shares in manufacturers, energy companies, logistics businesses, and their customers at the same time. This creates exposure to a supply chain rather than making the manager the operator of that chain. Relevant evidence includes holding size, delegated voting authority, fund restrictions, and actual engagement. Overlapping holdings across managers cannot be added as if they were separate underlying corporate wealth.
Documented regulatory findings and settlement
The SEC’s January 2025 settled order found misleading disclosures about potential tax consequences for certain target-retirement-fund investors in taxable accounts. Separately, Vanguard’s February 2026 coal-antitrust settlement committed US$29.5 million and passivity measures while expressly denying unlawful conduct. These are different matters: an administrative finding and a civil settlement should not be described as one conviction. [3][4]
