How size, ownership & influence are compared

The word biggest needs a measure. Revenue, assets under management, fund value, personal wealth and institutional authority answer different questions.
How the twenty actors were selected
This is a documented selection of five corporations, five suppliers, five investment institutions and five individuals with substantial international reach or policy roles. It is not an exhaustive ranking of the world’s twenty largest entities under one metric. Individual profiles use public institutional responsibility or disclosed philanthropic activity rather than an unsupported ranking of personal fortunes.
Revenue, assets and ownership
Corporate profiles use annual revenue or net sales with fiscal dates. Suppliers retain their reporting currencies and company-specific bases. Investor profiles distinguish client assets under management, assets held in custody, and a state investor’s own net portfolio value. A number is only comparable after its definition, currency and date have been checked.
Avoid double counting
A fund manager can report a holding on behalf of clients; it does not follow that the manager’s executives personally own that value. State Street’s custody figure and managed-assets figure are different service measures and can overlap. Fink’s leadership role and BlackRock’s managed portfolios are two profiles of a connected relationship, not two independent pools of money. [1]
Reporting periods matter
Apple’s headline uses its 2025 annual net sales, while the body separately labels a more recent quarter. Other annual periods and investors’ valuation dates differ. No quarter is multiplied into a fabricated annual result, no exchange-rate conversion is silently applied, and no total is calculated by adding these unlike figures. [2]
Policy support and financial backing
A speech documents a public position. A lobbying disclosure records specified political engagement. A grant record identifies a commitment, recipient and purpose. A shareholding concerns ownership rights, while a supplier contract concerns a commercial relationship. A common interest in trade cannot substitute for evidence that money funded a particular campaign.
What to examine critically
Look for market concentration, voting rights, procurement leverage, labor and environmental outcomes, subsidy conditions and access to decision-makers. Distinguish allegations, settlements, commitments and court findings. These questions allow scrutiny of concentrated power without assigning a single motive to every company, institution or person.
