Scale or institutional role

Annual operating revenue: RMB 423.7 billion

Period: Year ended December 31, 2025

Company-reported operating revenue in renminbi; not battery capacity or market capitalization. [1]

Scale and supply role

CATL reported 2025 operating revenue of RMB 423.7 billion and lithium-ion battery sales of 661 gigawatt-hours. Batteries connect material processing with electric vehicles and stationary storage. Gigawatt-hours measure energy capacity; they are not a monetary measure and should not be compared directly with another supplier’s revenue. [1]

Ownership and control

The 2025 annual report describes Zeng Yuqun’s control of Xiamen Ruiting, the company’s controlling shareholder, and an indirect company shareholding of 22.45% at year-end. This is a specific disclosed governance relationship. Corporate control, an individual’s economic interest and government regulation are different concepts, even when all affect business decisions. [2]

Cross-border manufacturing

In December 2024, Stellantis and CATL announced a 50–50 joint venture for a battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain, with investment of up to €4.1 billion. They targeted production by the end of 2026, subject to conditions. This is a dated plan and ownership arrangement, not confirmation here that the plant had opened or reached its intended capacity. [3]

Public policy and disputed designation

Reuters reported that the U.S. Defense Department added CATL to its Section 1260H list in January 2025. CATL disputed the designation and denied military-related activities. The reporting distinguished the listing from an immediate general ban. This is a documented historical controversy, not an independently established finding that every allegation is true or a statement about later legal outcomes. [4]

Questions to examine

Assess factory delivery, material traceability and current trade restrictions with dated records. Distinguish a technology license, joint venture and ordinary customer contract. Global battery demand and shared customers do not by themselves prove common political aims.
