2023: Nahel’s death, riots & local damage

On 27 June 2023, a police officer shot and killed 17-year-old Nahel during a traffic stop in Nanterre. His death prompted public grief, protests and demands for accountability. Over subsequent nights, rioting in several French cities included fires, looting and attacks on public property.

Government authorities deployed tens of thousands of officers. Reuters reported damage to vehicles, shops and public buildings, including facilities that serve the same neighborhoods affected by the violence. Residents, shopkeepers and municipal workers faced immediate safety and repair costs.

The shooting, protests about policing and criminal acts during riots must be examined separately. Evidence of a particular perpetrator’s conduct does not prove that a political organization directed every disturbance, and the ancestry of residents is not evidence of criminal responsibility. The episode also reopened debate about policing, opportunity and distrust in disadvantaged suburbs.
