6. Genghis Khan & the Mongol Conquests
1. How events unfolded
Temüjin unified competing steppe groups and built a highly mobile military system. Mongol campaigns crossed Central Asia, northern China and beyond. Cities that resisted could face catastrophic destruction, while communities that submitted sometimes retained officials and artisans under new rulers.
2. The costs & gains
The devastation of cities such as Nishapur and the disruption of irrigation in some regions became symbols of conquest. Yet the later Mongol successor states also supported long-distance travel, diplomatic exchange and commercial routes. Protection of merchants and relay communications linked territories previously separated by rival powers.
3. What endured
The empire fractured into khanates with distinct policies. The same conquests that caused displacement and death could later create corridors for trade and the transmission of knowledge—and disease. Outcomes depended on local survival, rebuilding and the choices of successor governments, not conquest alone.
