17. Middle East: War, Resources & Regional Power
1. How events unfolded
The Iranian Revolution of 1979 altered regional alliances; the Iran–Iraq War then caused immense losses. Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 linked territorial aggression to control of strategic resources. Later wars in Iraq, Syria and Yemen combined domestic power struggles with outside intervention.
2. The costs & gains
Oil revenues can finance services and infrastructure but also intensify struggles over state control. Sanctions, bombardment, displacement and damaged water or power networks burden civilians long after front lines shift. The region is not one conflict: local histories, religious communities and political institutions differ.
3. What endured
Reconstruction requires more than funds pledged at international conferences. Safe housing, public administration, legitimate security forces and dependable water and electricity determine whether displaced families can return and businesses can reopen.
