11. American Civil War & Reconstruction
1. How events unfolded
The Civil War arose fundamentally from conflict over slavery and its expansion, alongside disputes about federal authority and the future of the Union. Battles, blockades and destruction devastated large areas, especially in the South. Enslaved people took decisive steps toward freedom by escaping, organizing and serving in Union forces.
2. The costs & gains
Emancipation transformed the legal foundation of the economy. The Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments changed constitutional rights, while Reconstruction governments built schools and expanded political participation. Former slaveholders sought to preserve control over land and labor, often through contracts, violence and discriminatory laws.
3. What endured
The retreat from federal enforcement allowed segregation and disfranchisement to deepen. The war destroyed property claims in human beings, but land redistribution remained limited. Freedom’s promise therefore depended on institutions capable of defending rights after armies departed.
