Political vocabulary & government processes · Article 19 of 20 · United States
Oversight
Examining whether public institutions follow the law.
What the term means
Oversight is the examination of government performance, spending and compliance. Congress uses hearings and investigations; inspectors general, auditors and courts also play distinct accountability roles.
How it works in practice
An audit finding does not automatically prove a crime, and an investigation does not itself establish wrongdoing. Evidence, jurisdiction and due process determine what follows.
A concrete example
A report finding inadequate contract controls may prompt revised procedures, repayment demands, legislation or further investigation.
What to examine next
Follow the corrective actions and measurable results, not only the announcement of an inquiry.
Next: General election.
