Electoral district

The geographic basis of representation.

What the term means

An electoral district is an area whose voters select a representative. Population change and redistricting can alter district boundaries, political competition and the communities grouped together.

How it works in practice

For the U.S. House, states receive seats through apportionment after the census, then districts are drawn under federal and state legal constraints. Districts are not identical to counties or cities.

A concrete example

A fast-growing suburb may be moved into a new district after redistricting, changing which member of Congress represents its residents.

What to examine next

Study district maps alongside population data; boundaries can shape political outcomes even when individual votes are counted correctly.

Next: Bill.
