Representation

How constituents authorize elected officials.

What the term means

Representative government gives voters a means to choose lawmakers and executives. District boundaries, election rules and term lengths affect who speaks for whom and how frequently voters can replace officeholders.

How it works in practice

Representatives must balance district interests, party commitments, national obligations and their own judgment. Elections provide accountability but do not guarantee that every voter’s preference becomes policy.

A concrete example

Two neighboring districts may elect lawmakers with opposing positions even when both are affected by the same infrastructure project.

What to examine next

Compare a representative’s voting record and committee work with campaign promises, not only public statements.
