AI, Robotics & Tunnels: Promises Under Test

1. Three different projects

xAI develops AI models and computing infrastructure; Tesla develops humanoid robotics; the Boring Company explores tunnel construction and transportation. Their goals differ sharply, so the evidence must be evaluated separately rather than grouped as one breakthrough.

2. Potential practical value

AI may accelerate research and routine knowledge work, while creating reliability and misuse challenges. General-purpose robots might eventually assist with repetitive or hazardous tasks, but demonstrations do not establish economical mass deployment. Tunnels can add routes in selected corridors, though capacity, cost and public access determine usefulness.

3. What to measure

For AI: error rates, safety, energy use and independent evaluation. For robots: autonomous task completion, uptime and total cost. For tunnels: passengers moved per hour, construction cost, emergency exits and accessibility. Inspirational engineering becomes public benefit only after passing these tests.

4. Historical peers

Alan Turing helped establish computation; industrial roboticists transformed factories; civil engineers built metros and underground railways. Musk’s ventures are ambitious combinations of existing research directions, not replacements for the people and institutions that established them.
