Human mind, violence & prevention

How public stories can turn uncertainty and resentment toward a chosen enemy.

Evidence reviewed: 16 October 2026. Educational information; individual assessment requires appropriate professional context.

The basic concept

Propaganda promotes a cause through selected messages and framing. Scapegoating assigns blame to a person or group without establishing responsibility for the problem being discussed. A closed explanation treats every challenge as further proof that its original claim must be true, making ordinary correction difficult.

A documented historical mechanism

USHMM describes how Nazi propaganda disguised aggression as defense and concealed persecution behind misleading language. The example shows organized manipulation in a particular historical setting. It does not make every persuasive message propaganda or establish that present-day critics of powerful institutions share that regime’s intentions. [1]

Belief and behavior require separate evidence

Secret Service research found hateful or conspiratorial beliefs in some attackers’ backgrounds. That association does not establish that everyone holding an unusual belief will become violent, or that a belief alone explains an attack. Investigations need evidence about conduct, context and intent. [2]

An example to think through

Illustrative example: a post claims that a whole community secretly directs every economic setback, while dismissing all contrary records as fabricated. Ask for a named decision, a dated financial relationship and independently checkable evidence. Documented corruption or collusion can be investigated without assigning collective guilt.

A useful response

Separate a verified fact from its interpretation and from a claim about motive. Consult original records and genuinely independent reporting. Correcting an unsupported allegation should not mean abandoning legitimate scrutiny of governments, companies or institutions; it means making that scrutiny more precise.
